Dear Colleagues,

Fraternal greetings!

The WFO was formed at the 4th IOC in San Francisco, California, USA, and 69 affiliate organizations became charter members. Since then, the WFO has grown to 112 affiliate organizations, representing almost 10,000 orthodontists who have become WFO fellows. To know about the history of the Federation, please click here.

WFO subscription can be easily renewed online here. For those who wish to seek membership, you can download an appropriate application form, whether you’re a qualified orthodontist or student.

The federation aims to  advance the art and science of orthodontics worldwide. The Federation is committed to promoting excellence in patient care globally. This is achieved through the following WFO objectives:

  1. Encouraging high orthodontic standards throughout the world.
  2. Encouraging and assisting the formation of national orthodontic associations and societies.
  3. Encouraging and assist the formation of national certifying boards in orthodontics through the  “Society of Orthodontic Speciality Certification Boards”- a standing committee of the WFO.
  4. Promoting orthodontic research.
  5. Disseminating scientific information.
  6. Promoting appropriate standards of training and certification of orthodontists through an “Educator’s Forum”.
  7. Encouraging the annual celebration of the “World Orthodontic Health Day” on the 15th of May every year as vehicle to spread the global message of speciality orthodontic care.
  8. Co-organizing the International Orthodontic Congress, which is held every five years.

The 9th IOC was held virtually in 2020,due to the travel restrictions placed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The 10th IOC will be hosted from the 8th-11th October,2025 in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  The Brazilian Association of Orthodontics (ABOR) will be the host of this event. This will offer colleagues a wonderful opportunity to visit Brazil and experience the first ever IOC in South America. Details of the congress can be accessed at www.wfo2025rio.org.

The IOCs require years of planning and enormous dedication from the host affiliate organization(s). The proposal forms for hosting the 11th IOC (2030) will be sent to all WFO affiliate organization presidents soon. The winning proposal will be announced in April 2022.

WFO fellows receive the WFO Gazette twice a year with other membership benefits, including a certificate of international orthodontic specialty recognition, reduced registration fees to WFO affiliate organization meetings, the usage of the WFO fellow logo, and inclusion in the WFO International Orthodontic Directory. The current and past issues of the Gazette can be viewed by clicking here.

WFO members also have full access to the Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists, which is a Medline indexed journal of repute. Click here to learn how to gain access.

The Orthodontic world unites every year on the 15th of May to celebrate the “World Orthodontic Health Day”. The WFO releases promotional materials every year to help colleagues celebrate and highlight the speciality. Click here to access the promotional material and logos.
