The global orthodontic community is mourning the loss of Dr. William H. DeKock, the founding president of the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO), who passed away on August 17, 2024. Renowned for his visionary leadership and dedication to advancing orthodontics, Dr. DeKock’s contributions have left an enduring legacy that continues to shape the profession worldwide.

Dr. DeKock’s career was marked by a deep commitment to fostering international collaboration and education among orthodontists. As president of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) in 1994-95, he spearheaded the formation of the WFO, bringing together 69 organizations from 62 countries to sign the original WFO charter during the 1995 AAO Annual Session in San Francisco. This momentous event also marked the revival of the International Orthodontic Congress (IOC), which had not been held since 1973. Dr. DeKock’s leadership was instrumental in designating the AAO’s 95th Annual Session as the 4th IOC, laying the foundation for the WFO’s ongoing mission to connect orthodontists globally.

As the first president of the WFO from 1995 to 2000 and later as secretary-general from 2000 to 2015, Dr. DeKock played a pivotal role in expanding the organization. Under his guidance, the WFO grew to include affiliate organizations in over 120 countries, strengthening the global orthodontic community. His remarkable contributions to the profession were further honored with the establishment of the WFO’s highest award, the William H. DeKock Distinguished Service Award, named in his memory.

Dr. DeKock’s influence extended beyond his leadership roles. After completing his orthodontic residency at the University of Iowa in 1967, he practiced in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for 35 years. In addition to his private practice, he served as an adjunct professor at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, mentoring countless orthodontists. He also held leadership positions in the Midwestern Society of Orthodontists (MSO), serving as president from 1980-81.
