The global orthodontic community mourns the passing of Dr. Donald “Skip” Ferguson, an esteemed educator, researcher, and mentor whose contributions to orthodontics have left an enduring impact. Known for his pioneering work, Dr. Ferguson’s expertise, dedication, and generosity shaped the careers of countless colleagues and students worldwide.
Dr. Ferguson’s research focused on critical areas of orthodontics, including bone biology, alveolar osteopenia, and rapid orthodontic techniques such as selective alveolar decortication and photobiomodulation. Over his career, he authored more than 100 articles and abstracts, contributed to several textbooks, and lectured extensively at universities and international forums, becoming a respected voice in the field.
Dr. Ferguson held several prominent academic leadership roles throughout his career. He served as chair of the orthodontic departments at Marquette University and Boston University, and as a faculty member at the Center for Advanced Dental Education at Saint Louis University. He spent two decades teaching in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where he was the founding dean and a distinguished professor at European University College. His commitment to advancing orthodontic education extended beyond the classroom, as he also maintained a private orthodontic practice and worked as a research collaborator and mentor to peers across the globe.
Dr. Ferguson’s professional achievements included being a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and serving as president of the Midwest Component of the Edward H. Angle Society. His influence as a lecturer and educator was profound, as he inspired audiences worldwide with his knowledge and insights.
A graduate of the University of Oregon School of Dentistry, Dr. Ferguson began his career in the United States Navy Dental Corps, where he served as a Lieutenant. He later completed his orthodontic program at the University of the Pacific in San Francisco, California, solidifying his foundation in the field he would go on to transform.
In a heartfelt tribute published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, WFO President Dr. Nikhillesh R. Vaid, along with Drs. Dauro Olivera and Pramod Sinha, reflected on Dr. Ferguson’s remarkable legacy. They noted:
“His expertise and the impact of his research have been acknowledged by metrics. What the metrics do not measure is the remarkable life he led, marked by his boundless kindness and generous heart. He inspired so many colleagues and students, not only through his expertise in orthodontics but also by mentoring young orthodontists to reach beyond their perceived limits and strive for greatness. His legacy of compassion and encouragement will continue to live on.”
Dr. Ferguson is survived by his three adult children and six grandchildren, who were a source of great pride and joy in his life. His commitment to mentorship, his passion for orthodontics, and his profound kindness will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
