As highlighted in the most recent issue of the Gazette, the global orthodontic community continues to mourn the loss of Dr. William DeKock, founder of the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO), who passed away on August 17, 2024. During his tenure as president of the American Association of Orthodontists (1994–95), Dr. DeKock, a staunch supporter of international collaboration and the exchange of ideas among orthodontists, played a key role in establishing the WFO. Thanks to his leadership, 69 organizations from 62 different countries came together to sign the original WFO charter at the 1995 AAO Annual Session in San Francisco.
In recent weeks, the WFO leadership received unexpected and touching news from Dr. DeKock’s family, who have honored his memory with a generous financial endowment to support the WFO awards program.
“This was a remarkable gesture by the family that underscores Dr. DeKock’s enduring vision and commitment to the orthodontic community,” said Former WFO President Dr. Nikhillesh Vaiid.
“This fund will not only serve to support our mission but will also ensure that Dr. DeKock’s legacy continues to inspire future generations of orthodontists around the world. In recognition of this heartfelt contribution, we have reached out to the DeKock family to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for their generosity.”
To ensure this generous gift has long-term impact, the WFO Central Office and Finance Committee are currently working together to identify effective and sustainable investment strategies.
“As we reflect on our shared history and the enduring legacy of Dr. DeKock, let us be reminded of the values he instilled in us: collaboration, compassion, and dedication to advancing our field,” said Dr. Vaiid. “His remarkable contributions continue to shape the WFO and the orthodontic profession, reminding us that even after his passing, he remains a guiding light. Together, let us embrace this opportunity to honor our founder and visionary leader, reaffirming our commitment to his mission and ensuring that his spirit lives on through the work we do.”
