The Greek Orthodontic Society and the Egyptian Orthodontic Society collaborate for second time in 2016
The Greek Orthodontic Society (GOS) held its 14th International Symposium April 16-17, in Athens, Greece, in cooperation with the Egyptian Orthodontic Society (EOS).
This symposium marked the second time the two societies have worked together in 2016. In February, the two organizations jointly presented the 28th EOS Scientific Meeting in Cairo, Egypt. The leadership of both organizations declared 2016 to be a year of collaboration, and these two meetings were a direct result of that decision, said Dr. Panagiotis Skoularikis, president of the GOS and a member of the WFO Executive Committee.
A carefully planned scientific program featured various orthodontic topics by expert speakers from around the world, including Dr. Joseph Bouserhal from Lebanon, Dr. Georgios Kanavakis and Dr. Gina Theodoridis from Greece, Dr. Maja Ovsenik from Slovenia, and Dr. Frank Hoelzle from Germany. The EOS contributed with three speakers: Dr. Khaled AboulAzm, Dr. Khaled Hazem Attia and Dr. Wael Refai.
In addition, a one-day course was presented by Dr. Wajeeh Khan on April 15. He addressed the technology of the Orthocaps® aligners and provided certification to the symposium’s attendees for this technique.
During the symposium’s Opening Ceremony, Dr. Aristides Melkos, the symposium coordinator, welcomed attendees. Short addresses were presented by Dr. Athanasios Katsikis, president of the Hellenic Dental Federation; Dr. Athanasios Zorbas, secretary-general of the Dental Association of Attica; Dr. Demetrios Halazonetis, professor and director of the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Athens; Dr. Moschos Papadopoulos, president of the Orthodontic Society of Northern Greece; Dr. Anna Papadogeorgaki-Anagnostou, president of the Hellenic Professional Union of Orthodontists; Dr. Georgia Sofroniou, secretary-general of the Cyprus Orthodontic Society; and Dr. Angel Alonso Tosso, president of the European Federation of Orthodontics.
The presidents of the GOS and EOS concluded the Opening Ceremony with short addresses. Dr. Abbas Zaher, president of the EOS, thanked the GOS for the successful collaboration and mentioned that this was the third time the two societies had worked together. Prior to the two events in 2016, the EOS and GOS offered a joint meeting in 2011 in Alexandria, Egypt.
In his address, Dr. Skoularikis noted that the high quality of the lectures will significantly contribute to the continuous orthodontic education of the participants. He also encouraged all visitors from abroad to visit the Athenian historic attractions and experience the atmosphere of the ancient Greek civilization.
Finally, Dr. Skoularikis announced the decision of the GOS Board of Trustees to recognize Dr. Zaher, professor at the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Alexandria, and past vice president of the WFO (2005-2010), with a lifelong honorary membership in the GOS, due to his international reputation, his continuing contributions to the specialty, as well as his yearlong friendship and cooperation with the GOS.
“A twinning of the two groups has already taken place, as a result of the excellent relations of both societies throughout the years, and, of course, the cultural and historical ties between the two countries,” Dr. Skoularikis said.
The social program of the symposium included a guided tour to the Acropolis Museum, as well as a gala dinner at the restaurant Strofi under the Acropolis hill. These social events provided some relaxing and memorable moments for the invited guests.
