WFO Committee on National and Regional Orthodontic Boards undertakes new projects to foster board certification globally

The WFO Committee on National and Regional Orthodontic Boards has several projects underway to spur the advancement of orthodontic specialty certifying boards. Currently, the committee is creating a comprehensive database of board protocols used around the world, as well as an organized forum that will allow representatives from certifying boards to interact with each other on a regular basis. The committee is also planning a meeting that will be held at the 2018 Annual Session of the American Association of Orthodontists in Washington, D.C., USA, and is organizing a board certification symposium for the 9th International Orthodontic Congress® (IOC) in Yokohama, Japan, in 2020.

Because the overall purpose of board certification is to improve the level of orthodontic treatment received by the public, the WFO Committee on National and Regional Orthodontic Boards strives to spark discussions and interest in the board-certification process among orthodontists worldwide. Several years ago, the committee developed guidelines to assist certifying boards, which are available online at Existing certifying boards may wish to compare their current guidelines and procedures to those recommended by the WFO and modify them accordingly if they find that their standards would be improved. The guidelines are also designed to encourage the establishment of new certifying boards in orthodontics.

A total of 16 orthodontic certifying boards serve as members on the WFO Committee on National and Regional Orthodontic Boards. The regional representatives represent their own regional boards. “WFO affiliate organizations will find these representatives are an excellent information resource regarding the value of the board-certification process,” said Dr. Nikhilesh Vaid, chair of the WFO committee.

Over the years, the WFO has also encouraged WFO fellows to become board certified and has assisted in the formation of certifying boards when requested. In addition, the WFO has hosted board certification symposiums during the IOCs held in 2005, 2010 and 2015. These meetings have yielded stimulating discussions among specialty boards around the world.

Recently formed certifying boards that wish to join this committee, or societies interested in forming a certifying board, may contact either Dr. Vaid or Dr. Thomas Ahman, co-chair of the committee. Contact information for both orthodontists is listed in the sidebar below.
