The Brazilian Association of Orthodontics and Facial Orthopedics (ABOR) voted to create the BBO in October 1998. The objectives of the BBO are to stimulate high professional standards for the specialty, to establish and maintain continuing education in orthodontics and to award certificates of clinical competence. The next examination will be held in March 2005. The Canadian Association of Orthodontists (CAO) will hold its 57th Annual Scientific Meeting September 22-24, 2005, at the Quebec City Hilton Hotel in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. The Scientific Program will feature Dr. Terry Sellke, Dr. Patrice Pellerin and Dr. Anoop Sondhi. The Auxiliary Program will feature Ms. Lucie Labenski-Blench, Dr. Terry Sellke, Ms. France Carpentier and Dr. Robert Hatheway. Dr. Amanda Maplethorp, president of the CAO, recently stated that the Association now has more than 650 members from across Canada. Members work collectively to advance the art and science of orthodontics, striving for higher standards of excellence in the industry, and to help promote public awareness of orthodontic health-care benefits rendered by certified orthodontic specialists. The European Federation of Orthodontics (FEO) elected its new officers during the XVIII National The European Federation of Orthodontics (FEO) elected its new officers in October. The FEO also presented the 2004 FEO Award to Drs. S. Zinelis, M. Makou, H. Gioka and T. Eliades for their research paper “Comparative study of the effect of in vitro and in vivo aging on morphology, microstructure and elemental composition of nickel-titanium orthodontic archwires.” The article appeared in the Hellenic Orthodontic Review (2003;6:45-58), the official scientific publication of the Greek Orthodontic Society. The FEO Award annually recognizes the best original paper published during the previous year in one of the scientific journals of the FEO member societies. The Orthodontic Society of Serbia and Montenegro will hold the 2nd International Orthodontic Congress of Serbia and Montenegro September 24-26, 2005, in Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro. The congress will present the newest theoretical and practical experiences of orthodontists from the United States and Europe. Discussions will focus on unsolved issues pertaining to jaw orthopedics, growth, results of treatment, finishing, retention and the avoidance of recidivism. Dr. Mladen Kuftinec will present a pre-congress course on September 24 and will cover “Biomechanics: From Basics to Interactive Self-ligation.” On September 26, Dr. Vincent Kokich will present a post-congress course, entitled “Orthodontic Finishing: Guidelines for Managing the Interdisciplinary Patient.” Please submit news briefs and announcements to the WFO Secretariat.
