Bring your orthodontic team to the 6th International Orthodontic Congress in September 2005

As an orthodontist, you have the important responsibility of assembling an effective staff that will assist you in delivering the best possible orthodontic treatment. When building this group of staff members, you should strive to create a team atmosphere and to encourage the staff members to excel.

An excellent learning opportunity that will assist you in furthering your team members’ skills is approaching. The 6th International Orthodontic Congress (IOC) and 3rd Meeting of the WFO will be held September 10-14, 2005, at the Palais des Congrés in Paris. The WFO Executive Committee supports not only the training and recognition of specialists but also continuing-education opportunities for orthodontic nurses, assistants, receptionists, secretaries and laboratory technicians — all for the sake of orthodontic patients. Consequently, the 6th IOC will feature the Orthodontic Team Program. This scientific program will be of interest to orthodontic staff members from around the world.

The Orthodontic Team Program Planning Committee encourages you to bring your staff to the 6th IOC. A schedule of events for orthodontic team members follows.

Orthodontic Team Program Schedule

  • Sunday, September 11: The staff attendees are invited to attend the Opening Ceremonies and the Champion Lectures, which will present the latest in orthodontic science and techniques. In the evening, the staff attendees are invited to the Presidents’ Reception.
  • Monday, September 12: A program for both front-desk and clinical personnel will bring together this international group of orthodontic team members.

The topics will include the following:

  1. how to reduce the number of emergencies, and
  2. how to anticipate and prepare for Class I, Class II and Class III orthodontic treatment. The latest technologies will be covered. For Class I treatment, attendees will learn about lingual, Invisalign, self-ligating and multidisciplinary approaches. For Class II treatment, attendees will discuss implants and fixed activators. For Class III treatment, the attendees will cover the latest in surgical procedures.

After the lectures, staff attendees may stay for an orthodontic fashion show and cocktail reception.

  • Tuesday, September 13: For the first part of the day, the attendees will be divided into two groups. The clinical personnel will learn about standards for sterilization and legal issues (informed consent, records and product survey). Front-desk staff will learn about technology advancements that can increase front-desk efficiency.

The two groups will reconvene for the following lectures:

1. What is new in dentistry,

2. 10 presentations by dental assistants,

3. The effect of communication: Team success (Honorary Lecture).

Janet Robins, chair of the British Orthodontic National Group, will coordinate the presentations by dental assistants. Ten orthodontic nurses or assistants will each be asked to give a ten-minute presentation. The best lectures will receive a significant reward. A reception and formal prize presentation will complete the day.

  • Wednesday, September 14: The orthodontic team members will attend the European Village Program. In the Palais des Congrés, several orthodontic societies will coordinate a one-day scientific program. The programs will be delivered in the societies’ native language; simultaneous translation will be available. Consequently, a Brazilian orthodontic assistant might want to follow the Portuguese conferences or an American dental assistant might want to attend the lectures sponsored by the European organizations.

The International Reception will conclude the 6th IOC.
